Money and tax

Tax rates change, and many US cities and counties add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. Where a calculator uses published rates, the page shows the date they were last checked. Confirm rates with the relevant tax authority, and speak to a qualified adviser about your own finances.

Home and building projects

Material estimates assume the shapes and sizes you enter. Real jobs need extra for waste, uneven ground, spillage and surface texture. Follow local building codes and your supplier's advice, and consult a professional for structural work.

School grades

Schools and teachers weight and round grades in different ways. Your syllabus or instructor has the final word on how your grade is calculated.

Religious calculators

Religious calculations depend on methods and schools of thought that differ between communities. Each page states the method it uses. In particular:

• Zakat: results are a guide only. Please consult a qualified scholar about your own zakat, especially for business assets, debts, retirement funds and jewelry.
• Hijri dates: converted dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Local moon sighting can make the actual date one day earlier or later.
• Church calendars: Easter dates follow the standard Western and Orthodox calculation methods. Your church's published calendar takes priority.

Dates and times

Date and time results use the calendar and clock settings of your own device. Daylight saving changes and time zones can affect results that span them, and each calculator page notes how it handles this.
