How to use the Hijri date converter
- Gregorian to Hijri: pick a date (it starts on today) to see the Hijri date in English and Arabic.
- Hijri to Gregorian: enter the Hijri day, month and year to find the matching Gregorian date and weekday.
- Islamic dates in a year: enter a Hijri year to list the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, the Day of Arafah, Eid al-Adha and other widely observed days.
How the conversion works
The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month starts with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, which fixes each month’s length in advance from astronomical rules. Its data is built into modern browsers, so the conversion runs on your device.
To go from a Hijri date to a Gregorian one, the converter estimates the date with the arithmetic Islamic calendar, then checks the Umm al-Qura calendar day by day until it finds the exact match. If you enter the 30th of a month that has only 29 days that year, it tells you.
Many communities start Ramadan and the Eids from a local moon sighting instead, so their dates can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day.
Worked example
- Saturday, March 1, 2025 converts to 1 Ramadan 1446 AH, the first day of Ramadan that year.
- Ramadan 1446 had 29 days, so 1 Shawwal 1446 (Eid al-Fitr) fell on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
- Monday, September 28, 2026 is 17 Rabi al-Thani 1448 AH.

Frequently asked questions
What is today’s date in the Hijri calendar?
Open the "Gregorian to Hijri" tab: it starts on today’s date and shows the Hijri date in English and Arabic. Because the Islamic day begins at sunset, some people count the next Hijri date from the evening before.
Why do Islamic dates differ between countries?
A Hijri month begins when the new crescent moon is seen, or is expected to be seen. Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar sets dates in advance from astronomical calculations, while many countries and communities wait for a local sighting. That is why Ramadan or Eid can start a day earlier or later in different places.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
A Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, which adds up to 354 or 355 days. That is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, so Ramadan and the Eids move about 11 days earlier each year and pass through every season over roughly 33 years.
How do I roughly convert a Hijri year to a Gregorian year?
Multiply the Hijri year by 0.97 and add 622. For 1448 AH, 1448 × 0.97 + 622 ≈ 2026. The Hijri year starts partway through the Gregorian year, so a single Hijri year always spans two Gregorian years; use the converter for an exact date.
What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?
Umm al-Qura is the official Hijri calendar of Saudi Arabia. Its months are fixed in advance using astronomical rules about the new moon as seen from Mecca, so every date can be looked up years ahead. This converter uses it for the years 1300 to 1600 AH (1882 to 2174).
