How to use the sales tax calculator

    1. Choose whether to add tax to a price, remove tax from a total, or find the rate from a price and a total.
    2. Pick your state. Its state rate fills in automatically.
    3. Enter your local rate, or press "Use the state average" for the average of local rates in that state.
    4. For a rate that isn't listed, such as another country's VAT, choose "Another rate" and type it in.

    Sales tax formulas

    • Combined rate = state rate + local rate
    • Tax = price × combined rate ÷ 100
    • Total = price + tax
    • Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + combined rate ÷ 100)
    • Tax rate = (total − price) ÷ price × 100

Tax is rounded to the nearest cent, as it is at the register.

    Worked example

You buy a $250 TV in a Texas city. Texas charges 6.25% and lets cities, counties and districts add up to 2% more, so many Texas cities charge the full 8.25%.

    • Combined rate: 6.25% + 2% = 8.25%.
    • Tax: $250 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = $20.625, which rounds to $20.63.
    • Total: $250 + $20.63 = $270.63.

    Working backwards from a $270.63 receipt: $270.63 ÷ 1.0825 = $250.00 before tax.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For a $250 purchase at 8.25%, the tax is $250 × 0.0825 = $20.63, and the total is $270.63. The rate to use is your state rate plus any city, county and district rates where you buy.

How do I work out the price before tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. If you paid $108.25 including 8.25% tax, the price before tax was $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 and the tax was $8.25. Multiplying the total by the rate would give the wrong answer, because the tax is a share of the pre-tax price.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets boroughs and cities charge their own, and some Montana resort areas charge a local resort tax, so you may still pay tax there.

Which state has the highest sales tax?

California has the highest state rate at 7.25%. Once average local taxes are added, Louisiana has the highest combined average rate, about 10.13% as of July 2026, followed by Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas and Alabama.

Why is my receipt different from the state rate?

Most states let cities, counties and special districts add their own sales tax, and some items such as groceries, clothing or prescription drugs are taxed at a lower rate or not at all. Enter your local rate in the calculator, or check your receipt or your state revenue department for the exact rate.
